Muninn
Guide: Accounts you connect

Accounts you connect

Träwelling and Swarm take a few minutes each, because Muninn has no server to do it for you. Here’s how, and why it’s worth the minutes.

Both are connected on an iPhone or iPad. Muninn for Mac doesn’t import from Träwelling or Swarm; it shows the journeys and check-ins your phone has already fetched, because they’re in the same chronicle.

Träwelling

Träwelling supports OAuth, but its OAuth layer (Laravel Passport) only accepts https:// addresses to send you back to. For a web app that’s sensible. An iPhone app without a server has no https:// address, only its own scheme, muninn://oauth, which Passport won’t accept. An app with a server would bounce through it; Muninn uses a personal access token instead. It does the same job and costs you one extra minute.

  1. Sign in at traewelling.de and go to Settings → API Tokens.
  2. Create a token and copy it. It’s only shown once.
  3. In Muninn, Settings → Sources → Träwelling, paste it and tap Connect Träwelling.

Muninn checks the token with Träwelling before saving it, so a bad paste fails straight away. The token is stored in the iOS Keychain and nowhere else. The first sync fetches your whole journey history; later ones fetch only what’s new. Disconnecting deletes the token, and you can revoke it at Träwelling independently.

Tokens don’t always last: Träwelling can expire or invalidate one, and then journeys stop arriving. Create a fresh token and paste it again. Tedious, I know. An app with a server would hold a refresh token and renew yours in the background; this is the one place where having no server costs more than a minute of setup.

Swarm

Foursquare gives every app a client ID and a client secret. A secret only stays secret somewhere its owner controls. An app without a server has one place to put it: inside the app, which goes to everyone who installs it, and anyone who opens it up could then make requests in Muninn’s name.

So you register a developer app in your own Foursquare account, and the credentials are yours. Your check-ins are fetched under your name, with a secret only you hold, and nothing of mine sits in the middle.

  1. Go to foursquare.com/developers, sign in, and create a new app.
  2. Set its redirect URI to exactly muninn://oauth.
  3. Copy the Client ID and the Client Secret.
  4. In Muninn, Settings → Sources → Swarm, paste both and tap Connect Swarm.
  5. Safari opens Foursquare’s authorisation page. Approving it brings you back to Muninn.

The first sync fetches your whole check-in history and can take a while; it shows its progress and picks up where it left off. Later syncs fetch only new check-ins. If you already have an OAuth token from elsewhere, Advanced: Manual Token takes it directly.

Keeping them current

Sync Recent on the front page of Settings fetches what’s new from Swarm and Träwelling. Remind me to sync nudges you when an account hasn’t synced in a while.
